English finally earned the Title

Harris English wins wild Travelers Championship in eight-hole playoff against Kramer Hickok

Seventy-two holes weren’t enough to decide the winner of the 2021 Travelers Championship.

Turns out neither were 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78 or even 79.

Thanks to a pair of clutch birdie putts in regulation on the 18th green at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, Harris English and Kramer Hickok found themselves in the longest playoff of the PGA Tour season on Sunday evening. Playoff birdies were at a premium as the two played eight extra holes between Nos. 17 and 18, each making par to extend the never-ending tournament.

English finally earned the title with a birdie on the eighth playoff hole for his fourth win on the PGA Tour and second of the year following his January victory at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

English got the playoff party started by making a 28-footer for birdie to reach 13 under and take the clubhouse lead from then-leader Marc Leishman, who was already in at 12 under. Playing in the final group, Hickok joined English at 13 under with a birdie putt of his own from inside nine feet, forcing the sudden-death playoff.

“I’ve known him since I was 12. He’s one of the hardest working players I’ve ever known,” said Jordan Spieth of his fellow Longhorn, Hickok. “He’s a great friend, he’s meant a lot to me. He’s earned this.”

Leishman finished third following a Sunday 6-under 64, followed by Abraham Ancer in solo fourth at 11 under with five players rounding out the top five all at 10 under: Kevin Kisner, Brooks Koepka, Hank Lebioda, Brian Harman and Brice Garnett.

An incredible finish to the US Open

“This one is very, very incredible, very hard to believe,” said Rahm. “… It almost feels like it’s a movie that’s about to end and I’m going to wake up soon. … I do love Torrey Pines, and Torrey Pines loves me.”

Rahm won his first major Sunday at the same site he won for the first time on the PGA Tour

Jon Rahm captured his first win on the PGA Tour at Torrey Pines back in 2017 with an eagle putt from 60 feet dropping on the par-5 18th hole to give him a final three-stroke advantage. On Sunday at the 2021 U.S. Open, Rahm claimed his first major championship victory on the same course in similar fashion.

The Spaniard won the 121st edition of the U.S. Open with birdies on No. 17 and 18 to best Louis Oosthuizen by a single stroke after trailing him through nearly the entirety of the fourth round, making him the first U.S. Open champion to birdie the final two holes since Tom Watson in 1982.

The birdie on 17 came from 24 feet, 7 inches, giving Rahm a share of the lead entering his final hole. On No. 18, he had a similar left-to-right trajectory putt that dropped right in the cup from 18 feet, 3 inches.

“I have a hard time explaining what just happened,” Rahm told NBC after the round, “because I can’t even believe I just made those last two putts.”

The final putt for Rahm was eerily reminiscent to Tiger Woods’ 12-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole of the 2008 U.S. Open, which was the first and only other major to be played at Torrey Pines. Woods’ putt that day forced an 18-hole playoff with Rocco Mediate, and he went on to win.

With the win, Rahm joins Woods among a group of five golfers who have won both a PGA Tour event and a U.S. Open on the same course. Woods did it both at Torrey Pines and Pebble Beach.

“It’s incredible that it finished the way it did,” Rahm said at the trophy presentation. “Making another putt on [No. 18] where I got my first win, it’s hard to describe.”

US OPEN WEEK – who’s ready?

It’s US OPEN week and we couldn’t be more excited.
Let’s take a look back at an epic win…

‘It Was Superman Stuff:’ A Look Back At Tiger Woods’ Epic Win At The 2008 U.S. Open At Torrey Pines

On a spectacular sun-drenched stage above the Pacific Ocean, Tiger Woods delivered the most astonishing performance in a career filled with spectacular acts of genius, power, artistry and relentless determination.

In the 2008 U.S. Open, the national championship that tees up the harshest challenge golfers face each year, Woods conquered the cruel Torrey Pines Golf Club’s South Course in San Diego, beat back a field of the world’s best players and somehow overcame excruciating pain to win his 14th major championship.

Playing with stress fractures in the tibia of his left leg and torn ligaments in his left knee, Woods, then 32, captured his third U.S. Open title in a thrilling Monday playoff duel with long-shot Rocco Mediate, whose loquacious, down-to-earth manner provided quite the contrast.

Woods grimaced, limped and at times staggered through five days of golf to join Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win the career Grand Slam three times over.

“It was Superman stuff,” said Dottie Pepper, a two-time major champion and current TV analyst. “One of the greatest achievements in the history of sports.”

Woods’ heroics that week included an inward 5-under-par 30 in the second round, a six-hole blitz to take the lead Saturday and one of the most memorable putts in tournament history on the 72nd hole.

A winner of a record-tying 82 PGA Tour titles, Woods said the 1997 Masters, which he won by a record 12 shots for his first major triumph, was the most memorable tournament he’s played.

The hardest one to win, however, “was, by far, the ’08 U.S. Open.”

US Women’s Open Golf 2021: Yuka Saso Becomes Joint-Youngest Winner in Event History

After topping Nasa Hataoka in a playoff at the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open on Sunday, Yuka Saso (19 years, 11 months, 17 days) matched Inbee Park as the youngest winner in the history of the event.

At one point, it appeared as though it was Lexi Thompson’s tournament to lose, but her lead evaporated, as she shot five over during the course of the final seven holes.

As a result, Thompson didn’t even take part in the two-hole aggregate/sudden-death playoff that crowned Saso as the champion at the Olympic Club Lake Course in San Francisco.

Patrick Cantlay, without Jon Rahm, wins the Memorial with an invisible asterisk

As golf attempts to get back to normal, you would have been hard-pressed to think things were not as they always were Sunday at Muirfield Village Golf Club for the final round of the Memorial Tournament.

Jack Nicklaus, tournament founder, host and 18-time major champion, took up his usual spot in the CBS-TV broadcast tower. He was there beside the 18th green to greet winner Patrick Cantlay, who outlasted Collin Morikawa in playoff. A robust crowd stood near the 18th green.
